Bicycle Traffic Count Results

Creating a bicycle-friendly society is an important component of community design that encourages and facilitates physical activity, sustainable commutes, and a cleaner human environment. In order to understand the strengths and weaknesses of a community’s bicycle infrastructure, organizations such as GGRBC may conduct bicycle traffic counts and surveys. Data gathered during a bicycle survey is useful when applying for federal funding for bicycle- and pedestrian-related projects; similarly, survey data can be used by municipalities to justify the accommodation of bicycles and pedestrians in transportation projects (such as more bike lanes!).

To date, GGRBC has conducted five bicycle traffic counts (September 2011, June 2012, September 2012, September 2013, and September 2014) to gather bicycle ridership data for use in cycling advocacy and planning processes. Counts have been conducted along Grandville Ave., Lake Dr., and Seward Ave.
