Biking Shorts - April 16, 2012

By Barbara Schmid

The GGRBC Youth Bicycle Safety education program launched today at Palmer Elementary School. Bicycle ambassadors were me, Lydia Henning and Robert Palmer.

We reached 40 fifth graders during the presentation, held in Miss Nichols classroom. The kids were very attentive and especially enjoyed the closing video that highlighted (in a fun way) the need to be aware of one's surrounding. They asked to see it a second time and enjoyed a good laugh about it.

The League of Michigan Bicyclists (LMB) provided us with their bike education booklets for handouts, which the kids seemed to appreciate. We trust that they were able to take away a few good safety tips that will keep them safe on their bikes this summer and for years to come.

Since this post, we also presented to Breton Downs Elementary School. Bicycle ambassador Henning gave an interactive class that had the 75 fifth graders asking lots of questions and volunteering their bicycling stories. Next week will kick off the Jenison schools program.
