Biking Shorts - February 10, 2012

Residents of Caledonia, Cascade and Gaines townships, as well as the City of Kentwood, who care about the state of our roadways, will want to attend a Town Hall Meeting on March 1.

State Representative Ken Yonker, District 72, is hosting the meeting at the Kentwood Public Library, 4950 Breton SE, Kentwood, MI 49508. He plans to discuss road funding issues and proposals. He will be joined Representatives Roy Schmidt and Rick Olson who co-authored a bi-partisan report on road funding.

The meeting, from 6-8 p.m., is intended to discuss the current road funding challenges facing Michigan and some of the proposals that have been made to address the issue.

This is an important topic for cyclists and pedestrians.  It's amazing how showing up and speaking up for what we believe is important can make a huge impact on politicians decisions. After all, they need our vote to get re-elected! So let's show up and tell these representatives that we want a better connected multi-modal transportation system that includes non-motorized options.

“Michigan's roads and bridges are in bad shape,” Yonker said. “A bipartisan report found that we need to increase road funding by $1.4 billion per year to maintain our roads. I have seen several different proposals about how to accomplish this. I welcome your feedback on how you think we should address this growing problem.”
